Freetown Christiania

In hopes of calming my stomach before my dinner at Restaurant 108 (the sister site of the currently closed Noma), I had a banana and ginger ale in a lovely quiet park in the anarchist hippie commune of Christiania.

I got a little bit of everything on this plate! My favorite was the rare roast beef. And the rye bread was excellent.

From a hot dog cart outside the Copenhagen city hall. I can't turn down a bacon-wrapped hotdog!

Foodhallen

Lovely food hall with a variety of foods, including burgers, BBQ, banh mi, hot dogs, a taqueria, even HK style egg waffles... of course we have those in San Francisco so I went for the bitterballen (Dutch croquette), asparagus (OMG yes why don't they have asparagus stands everywhere?!), and Belgian fries. Oh and of course the beer stand, where the awesome dude working there recommended local beers to me.

I couldn't leave Amsterdam without trying the famous Dutch apple pie. The crust is less flaky than it is in American pie and has a crunchy, cookie-like texture on the outer edges.

Lunch at the food stands again. The poffertjes were amazing. They are coin-sized, yeast-raised pancakes with a toothsome texture. Much tastier than giant, flabby, American pancakes.

I'm really loving the stamppot (mashed potatoes with mixed vegetables) here! The meatball was more finely textured than the one I had last night.

Late flight with a budget carrier (no meals provided), so I packed my own meal. And, yes, that is a whole bunch of asparagus. It's my favorite vegetable and is in season now!

I was supposed to go with other people but they were busy... so I decided to go on my own since I was in the neighborhood. The miso egg is a nice addition! They also have a soy sauce egg available. This is the second time I've come here and they've forgotten items. In this case, the duck chashu and the extra slice of pork chashu, but I asked and it was quickly rectified.

I was craving sushi but didn't want to pay sushi bar prices. This is a cheap takeout counter with decent sushi for the price. Don't expect Michelin star amazingness but you'll get a good cheap meal here. The best menu item is their fried oyster burger.
