Dumpling House
Koreanother
The dumplings here are super tasty! It's a little more expensive than I would have expected for dumplings. King dumplings have the best value, otherwise you're looking at $15-$20 a person for lunch, in a restaurant with slow service and casual atmosphere. Probably won't be back.

Delicious bowl of tonkotsu ramen! It seemed like the noodles and broth were on the oily side. Order an extra egg half for a perfect soft boiled egg.

Salt & Straw
Ice Cream Shop
This place is famous for its long lines and creative ice cream flavors. Actually, one car drove by and exclaimed "it's not worth it!" at us and our fellow line-standees. Fortunately the line moves quickly, after 15 minutes we were able to decide that for ourselves. As expected by the name, the ice cream is very salt forward. Salt sensitivity varies by person, so it may not be for everyone. I found the almond brittle ganache and chocolate chip ice cream delicious. My boyfriend...not so much. Serving sizes are generous. The two of us had difficulty finishing two scoops.

Nong's Khao Man Gai's brick and mortar location serves a simple menu of Khao Man Gai, which is the Thai version of hainan chicken rice. How can something so simple be so delicious?? I highly recommend trying!

Portland Japanese Garden
Japanese
The Umami Cafe is a small teahouse located in the Portland Japanese Garden. The design is beautiful and fits in serenely with the surrounding gardens. After walking through the rest of the gardens we noticed there was no line and empty tables and decided to treat ourselves! The hostess and waitress were very friendly, informative and quick. The little balcony was a beautiful place to drink a cup of tea, which was thoughtfully presented. Yes, it is expensive ($12 for a cup of matcha and an accompanying sweet) but the tea they serve is the real deal. The tea is imported from the Jugetsudo Tea Company, in Tokyo, which was founded in 1854. So, I judge the price to be fair considering the quality of the tea, the museum environment, and attentive service.

Fat Straw
Vegan
Vegan bubble tea cafe. The interior is really cute and cozy. It would be an awesome place to study or work for a few hours. The milk tea is awesome!! The smoothies...not so much. We got the banana and honeydew smoothie, it tasted like no actual fruit was involved. Candylike, overly sweet, and artificial taste for both. Stick with the milk teas!

HA & VL Sandwich

Banh mi and pho restaurant that was a semi finalist for the 2017 James Beard Award! I first read about them in the Lucky Peach Pho Issue. They serve a limited number of soup a day, rotating throughout the week. When we went for the second time they were sold out of everything but the pho Gai. It's the most delicious pho Gai I've ever tried! (Not that I'm an expert). If I was able to stay in Portland for a week I would come back here every day. It's that good!

Ken's Artisan Bakery
Bakery
After reading and baking from Ken's award winning cookbook, Flour, Water, Yeast, and Salt, I had to visit his bakery in Portland. His signature is letting the pastries and bread darken beyond the typical golden brown, which brings a new range of flavors to the bread. Aside from the pastries pictures (all insanely good), we purchased a country blonde loaf, which helped make for a great picnic behind a waterfall on our hike the next day.

Rose Cardamom Tres Leches! I love this flavor combination! I couldn't help but try it once I saw the recipe below. I did take the extra time to bake the cake base from scratch, using the tres leches recipe from smitten kitchen. https://www.google.com/amp/s/abeernajjar.com/2017/02/13/rose-cardamom-tres-leches-abeers-day-off/amp/

This was our last meal in Munich and it was a great choice. I forgot to take pictures beyond the appetizer because I was so excited for the food! The dishes we ordered (braised lamb, chicken, lentils) were each delicious and perfectly spiced. The setting is beautiful, too!

Great place to try local food, it's a little down the road from the crowds at the city center. You can eat on a peaceful patio and listen to the river.

Pho Viet Nam
VietnamesePho
It's a bit weird eating pho in Prague and Munich! Where are the heaping plates of bean sprouts, Thai basil, cilantro, and other herby goodies? Where is my sriracha and hoisin sauce? One place in Munich serves pho with a fork and spoon...no chopsticks. ๐Ÿ˜ฎHappily, even without the "accessories" I'm used to, the pho here is cheap, solid meal. ๐Ÿ˜‹
