Bakehouse (Wan Chai)
Bakery
From the former Four Seasons pastry chef, Gregoire Michaud, Bakehouse has been my favorite place for Western baked goods. Being my favorite, it sure became a lot of others go to bakery as well. Saturday afternoon, there’s a line for not just the dine-in’s, but also one for the takeout. Fortunately, it moved pretty quickly, mostly due to their high-energy, efficient goodies peeps behind the counter. From buttery croissants to the ‘crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside’ cookie, to the crunchy, fat-laden granola, Bakehouse’s carby goods has never failed to satisfy. Well, except for the Mango Vanilla Creme Filled Donut, that was just pure disappointment and a waste of calories. On a brighter note, the Sourdough Egg Tarts and the Double Chocolate Cookies are to die for! Even DH says ‘approved’ with his mouthful! Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambience: casual Be prepared to wait in line at all times (even for takeout!)

FRANCIS
Middle Eastern
Been wanting to try Francis for a while now. Initially went on a Friday at 6:30pm, got blatantly told by the host that they won’t be able to seat us until the full party is there (which is fair), but his attitude was so xxxx and gave off the vibe that he really doesn’t care whether you eat there or not. Fast forward Monday night. Same guy. Equally unhelpful. But the saving grace was everyone else is nice and willing to give us recommendations. Overall, negating the host, the service was on point! Wanting to try a bit of everything, we opted for the tasting menu that consisted of ten dishes. All in all, the food was good, though not much that leaves me craving for more (except for the dessert!) Food: 4/5 Service: 2/5 Ambience: small group Be prepared to wait past 6:30pm

Samsen (Wan Chai)
Thai
Our favorite boat noodle place! Got there at 12:10pm on a Sunday afternoon and there was already a wait! Luckily, being the first in line it was only a mere 15 minute wait (compared to the guy that came 5 minutes later and probably had to wait for 30 mins or so). Anyways! As you may have guessed, it’s fricking good! Well. Not exactly orgasmically awesome but definitely THE go to place for a quick bite. The Samsen Wagyu Beef Noodle Soup is our ‘must order’. The broth is thick, flavorful, and you can kind of tell that they’ve spent hours perfecting it. So you can imagine amongst the beef, beef balls, and beef brisket, my utmost favorite part of the dish was the... noodles! The Fried Egg with Chili Jam was seriously, surprisingly good. For almost 80 bucks, I had always looked at this particular item on the menu with absolute disdain, cause me being me, I’d think, seriously, you wanna charge me this much for fried eggs I can make myself at home? My gosh was I wrong! It’s actually not a pan fried egg, but rather more of a soft boiled egg that’s deep fried, accompanied by fried garlic, onions, soya sauce and some of this delish chili jam. Yes. It’s expensive for just two eggs. But trust me, try it. They’re hella good eggs. Food: 5/5 Service: 3/5 Ambience: quick meal Be prepared to wait in line unless you’re there right before they open

Fini’s
American
Wanted to go to Samsen but unfortunately the line was pretty insane so decided to check out Fini’s. Didn’t have high expectations, but unfortunately was slightly below my personal taste. It’s not terrible perse, but I just wouldn’t go back. For an American Italian establishment, I expected the pasta to be way better. The Mac ‘n Cheese was really weird with the scallions, although to be fair, it didn’t bother DH that much and to be fair, it wasn’t terrible. It was creamy and the pasta was well cooked, but I would reach for a box of Aunt Annies anytime over it. The Orecchiette was... I had a couple of bites and stopped eating. It was utterly flavorless despite a hint of heat. I just wasn’t a fan. Food: 2/5 Service: 3/5 Ambience: casual

CIAK - In The Kitchen
Italian
It’s been awhile since we frequented Ciak in Landmark. Surprisingly, for a Saturday night, it was decently packed. The service was OK. Nothing exceptional nor was it appalling, basically what you would expect in most places. The food was also OK. Nothing exceptional nor appalling. Except for the Caprese. The buffalo cheese was well cured (in my dictionary that means it’s not soft and gooey), it lacked flavoring and ended up having to douse it well oil and vinegar. Please don’t ever order this again. Considering it’s most known for their pizzas, the dough was on point, crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. My favorite thing about Ciak is the ability to order half-half. Knowing me, major indecisive freak, I wouldn’t decide on whether I wanted Margherita or Prosciutto Formaggi.

Bread and Beast
Sandwiches
One of our favorite sandwich joint went through a major revamp. Gone are the days of grab and go sandwiches, but rather an actual sit-down-get-served establishment. Not only has their mode of operation changed, but a much wider variety of dishes has been added to the menu. Can’t say whether this evolution is good or bad, but I guess now having to wait for a table, it’s a food sign for them? For me personally though, I was crying a on the inside when I realized my go-to Ngau Namwich was gone from their Brunch Menu and now replaced by the Beast Croissant. Let’s start with the Coconut Yoghurt Bowl with Creamed Yoghurt, Blueberry Goji Coconut Granola, Bourbon Caramel, Berries, and Chia Seeds. If I were to say one thing, there’s crap loads of yoghurt. It totally defied my perfect 1:1 yoghurt to granola ratio that I ended up with half the bowl of yoghurt left. I know some people really dig yoghurt, but I just like it as a.. dressing. Ok I lied. One more thing. I think I’ve been having a pretty bad luck lately cause I swear there’s cinnamon in the granola, which is common, but I hate cinnamon with a passion. Moving on to the Beast Croissant with Slow Cooked Brisket, Croissant. Scrambled Egg, Tomato Coriander Jam, plus Kumquat Cabbage Slaw and Lotus Chips. DH enjoys the egg compliment with the usual brisket from their sandwich, however, he did mention preferring the previous sandwich version more as the egg made the croissant soggy, which is never a good thing!

Chop Chop
ChineseCantonese
Unlike your typical Chinese BBQ joints, Chop Chop is clean and modern. The tables were cafeteria style so don’t expect to spend hours there. Chop Chop Pork Belly Char Siew Rice. For some strange reason, the fried egg on top really compliments the roast pork rice, maybe it’s the runny egg yolk on the rice? I don’t know. The Char Siew was on the fatty side, but it is Pork Belly and the waiter did kindly remind us that it will have more fat than the typical Char Siew. Personally preferring having some fat in my meat, it was good! However, I did notice a hint of cinnamon in the meat and I didn’t love it, though DH didn’t think it was an issue and he thought it was fine. The dipping sauce that came along with it was some BBQ sauce? Whatever it is, it added more flavor and punch to the meat. The roast goose was crispy and also on the fatter side. I even had to scrape the excess fat off (even that’s too much for me!) although the goose was nicely roasted, I found it too flavorful to be eaten alone (ie without rice). Half an hour after the meal, definitely satisfied but I think the msg is hitting me!

Carbone Hong Kong
Italian
Monday night at 6:30 and pretty packed already! Food at Carbone has been consistent throughout the years. The service reminds me of the mom and pop Italian places in New York, with friendly waiters making you comfortably at home with their meatball jokes and the discussion of art pieces strewn throughout the restaurant. Back to food! My favorite is still the Spicy Rigatoni Vodka, which I can confidently speak for almost every other patron there as well. Perfectly al dente pasta, creamy, tangy, with a hit of heat, it’s definitely a dish that I crave for from time to time. Other dishes that we ordered were the Sizzling Pancetta, which was a tad heavy for an antipasto but it was indeed flavorful to the point of being slightly too heavy with the seasoning, but hey, it went well with the bread basket! The steak and the side of mushrooms was also a tad too heavy with the seasoning but it was well cooked to medium rare so can’t complain. To end the night, the lemon cheesecake hit the spot with a luscious lemon cream cheese and buttery, crumbly crust. Word of advice, best paired with a coffee. Definitely a will go back (considering we have been back) but rather than the sizzling pancetta I’ll probably stick with the Caprese and maybe another pasta dish instead of the protein.

Food was OK... Decor and atmosphere was comfortable, simple Scandinavian. Has an outdoor terrace. Of the lunch set, the scallop was definitely the star. As a fan of blue cheese, found the burger to be too overwhelming and heavy. Sticky toffee pudding has a strong ginger taste, Bread Street Kitchen was definitely more sinful.

Small restaurant so recommend to call for reservations in advance. Service was great! Friendly and helpful! Food was.... a little hit or miss I think. It’s overall good but I just wished the prawn toasts were crispier and the fried dough with the pate was fresher... and most importantly... that the financier didn’t taste like a muffin/pound cake and thaw cookie wasn’t rock hard but rather warm, crunchy and chewy. On the other hand! Food really wasn’t bad. I would definitely go back and give them another chance. The menu was definitely innovative and I loved the chicken dish! Although I wished the fried dough was fresher but I did find myself scraping off the very last bits off the dish! Overall... more stars than wished. Hopefully the next time I’m back my wishes will come true!

The Coconut Club
Malaysian
Went during a weekday lunch time and it was packed! Unfortunately by the time we arrived most of the items on the menu were already sold out. Nonetheless, the chicken was well fried - crispy skin with tender meat and the coconut rice was to die for! Wish we went earlier so could check out other side dishes on the menu next time!
